Our Group
Huntingdonshire Ramblers are part of the national Ramblers Association and are based in Huntingdon.
The Group is organised through an active committee which is responsible for (amongst other matters) local memberships, the programme of walks, the recruitment and training of walks Leaders, Rights of Way issues and local finances. Current members of the committee are listed here: ⇒
Hunts Ramblers organises regular walks led by experienced volunteers. The rambles typically take place at weekends but many are arranged on weekdays and evenings, particularly in summer. We offer a variety of routes around Huntingdon, across Cambridgeshire and surrounding area. They are mostly rated leisurely or moderate but we’re always on the lookout for a hill or two to climb. Distances vary from 4 to 14 miles (7 to 23 km).
History
It is believed that the Group was established in or around 1974. Early Chairs of the committee were Dr Willem Hertzog (who founded the Group), Eric Butler, Vic Jenkins and Bill Thompson.
It is understood that Dr Hertzog was noted for treating Josef Jakobs, the last German spy to be executed in the Tower of London. Jakobs was captured on a farm near Ramsey. He had a broken ankle and Dr Hertzog was called to Ramsey police station to examine him before he was transferred to London.
We celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2024, organising special walks and events to mark the occasion.
